Akota-Chika Serena, world’s top Cambridge IGCSE English scorer, compares exam styles with WAEC Nigerian student Akota-Chika Serena, who achieved the highest score globally in Cambridge IGCSE English, has shared insights into the differences between the Cambridge examination system and the West African Examinations Council WAEC assessment. Akota-Chika Serena, a student of Caleb-British International School in Lagos, earned global recognition after recording the highest mark worldwide in Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education IGCSE English, receiving the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award. Speaking in an interview, Serena explained that while both Cambridge IGCSE and WAEC test students’ knowledge and understanding, the two examinations approach learning and assessment differently. Serena said Cambridge IGCSE places greater emphasis on a student’s ability to analyse information, express ideas clearly and apply knowledge rather than simply recall facts. She explained that the structure of the examination encourages critical thinking, comprehension and effective communication skills. Cambridge’s English programmes are designed to develop students’ ability to communicate accurately, analyse texts and present ideas effectively. According to Serena, students preparing for Cambridge examinations need to focus on understanding concepts and developing strong writing and reasoning skills. Comparing the two systems, Serena noted that WAEC can require students to memorise more outside information in preparation for examinations. She explained that WAEC often places more emphasis on recalling studied materials, including information beyond what may be directly provided in an examination question, while Cambridge tends to focus more on interpretation and application. Her comments have sparked discussions among students and educators about different approaches to examination preparation and learning. Serena’s achievement placed her among the highest-performing Cambridge learners worldwide. She was recognised alongside fellow Caleb-British International School student Tolulope Israel Adekimi, who also achieved the world’s highest score in Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics. The school celebrated the achievement as a milestone for Nigerian students participating in international academic competitions. Education experts say success in any examination system requires students to understand the expectations of the assessment style. While Cambridge examinations often reward analytical thinking and communication skills, WAEC preparation may require students to combine understanding with detailed knowledge of the syllabus.
