One of the most famous gatherings takes place at Stonehenge, where thousands of people assemble annually to watch the sunrise align with the ancient monument’s stones. Although the summer solstice delivers the year’s longest daylight period, it is not always the hottest day of the year. Oceans and land masses continue to absorb and store solar energy after the solstice, creating a seasonal lag that means peak summer temperatures often occur weeks later. Following June 21, daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere will gradually decrease until the autumnal equinox in September, when day and night become nearly equal in length. Scientists note that the exact timing of the solstice can vary slightly from year to year because the Earth’s orbit around the Sun does not align perfectly with the calendar year. However, it typically occurs between June 20 and June 22.
