Lagos Seals 239 Facilities, Arrests 931 People in Environmental Crackdown The Lagos State Government has sealed 239 facilities and arrested 931 persons for environmental offences as part of intensified enforcement operations aimed at strengthening compliance with sanitation and waste management regulations across the state. The disclosure was made by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja. According to Wahab, the Ministry’s Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance MEC operations were significantly strengthened within the review period to ensure stricter adherence to environmental laws. He revealed that officials inspected 2,251 sites, issued 1,711 contravention notices, and sealed 239 facilities found to be in violation of environmental regulations. Wahab also confirmed that 931 individuals were arrested for various waste management offences across different parts of Lagos State. He said the enforcement operations are part of ongoing efforts to improve urban sanitation, reduce indiscriminate waste disposal, and enforce environmental discipline in Africa’s most populous city. The Commissioner added that enforcement teams also evacuated more than 650 tonnes of construction waste during the period under review. He explained that the state government sustained public awareness campaigns focused on construction, demolition, and disaster waste management in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. Wahab further disclosed that the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency LASEPAintensified environmental monitoring through the installation of 114 air quality sensors across the state. He noted that the initiative is aimed at improving air quality management, reducing pollution levels, and safeguarding public health. As part of environmental sustainability efforts, the government also introduced cleaner fish processing technology at Ago Egun, Makoko, through improved fish kilns designed to reduce smoke emissions. According to him, the innovation has helped improve air quality while protecting the health of local fish processors Wahab reaffirmed that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to strengthening environmental compliance, deploying modern technology, and ensuring a cleaner and healthier Lagos. He stressed that enforcement efforts will continue across the state to sustain environmental discipline and improve quality of life for residents.
