Ebola Risk High Regionally But Low Worldwide WHO
The World Health Organization WHO has said the risk posed by the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC remains high at both the national and regional levels, although the global risk is currently considered low. The health agency made the disclosure on Wednesday amid growing concerns over the spread of the deadly virus in eastern parts of the Central African nation.
According to the WHO, 51 confirmed Ebola cases have so far been recorded in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, areas that have historically experienced repeated outbreaks due to insecurity and weak healthcare infrastructure. A WHO official, speaking during a press briefing at the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva, stated that while confirmed figures remain relatively limited, authorities believe the actual scale of the outbreak may be significantly larger than currently reported. The organisation noted that challenges including armed conflict, population displacement, limited surveillance access, and community mistrust continue to complicate containment efforts in the affected regions. Despite the regional threat level, the WHO stressed that the likelihood of widespread international transmission remains low due to existing monitoring systems, cross-border surveillance, and rapid response measures already activated in neighbouring countries. Health authorities in the DRC, supported by international partners, are continuing vaccination campaigns, contact tracing, case isolation, and public awareness efforts aimed at preventing further spread of the virus. The WHO also urged neighbouring countries to strengthen preparedness measures, particularly at border areas, while encouraging communities to report symptoms early and avoid unsafe burial practices that could accelerate transmission. Ebola is a severe viral disease that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and has historically recorded high fatality rates in several African outbreaks. The latest outbreak has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of conflict-affected communities in eastern Congo, where humanitarian and health crises have persisted for years.
- WHO says Ebola risk is high in DRC and surrounding region
- Global risk level remains low
- 51 confirmed cases reported in Ituri and North Kivu
- Actual outbreak scale may be larger than reported
- Vaccination and containment efforts ongoing
- Conflict and insecurity hindering response operations
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a highly infectious illness characterised by symptoms including:
- Fever
- Severe weakness
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Muscle pain
- Internal and external bleeding in severe cases
The disease is transmitted through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids and requires rapid isolation and treatment to contain outbreaks.
