NDLEA Seizes ₦16.9bn Worth Of Opioids From Illegal Lagos Warehouse

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered and confiscated opioids valued at ₦16.9 billion from an illegal warehouse in Lagos State, dealing what authorities described as a major blow to Nigeria’s illicit pharmaceutical drug market. According to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the massive seizure followed an intelligence-driven operation targeting organised drug trafficking networks operating within the commercial hub. Marwa disclosed that the successful raid exposed a sophisticated distribution chain responsible for flooding Nigerian communities with dangerous and highly addictive pharmaceutical opioids. He stated that the operation struck at the “heart of the pharmaceutical drug black market,” stressing that traffickers increasingly exploit prescription medicines to fuel substance abuse across the country.

The NDLEA boss explained that operatives recovered large consignments of controlled opioids stored illegally in the warehouse, adding that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest all individuals connected to the criminal operation.

Authorities warned that the circulation of illicit opioids poses serious public health and security risks, particularly among young Nigerians, noting that such drugs contribute significantly to addiction, crime, and social instability. Marwa reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug cartels nationwide, pledging sustained enforcement actions, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration with other security agencies. The NDLEA urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist in tracking illegal drug storage facilities and trafficking routes, emphasizing that community support remains vital in combating drug abuse and trafficking. Officials say further updates will be provided as investigations progress and suspects are brought to justice.
