SNAP CUTS 1,000 JOBS, CITES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS DRIVER OF WORKFORCE REDUCTION
SNAP CUTS 1,000 JOBS, CITES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS DRIVER OF WORKFORCE REDUCTION Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has announced plans to lay off around 1,000 employees, citing the growing efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) tools that are reshaping how work is done across the tech industry. In a memo to staff, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said the company is restructuring its workforce as AI advancements increasingly allow smaller teams to handle tasks that previously required larger headcounts.
The layoffs represent approximately 16% of Snap’s global workforce, alongside the closure of more than 300 open positions that will no longer be filled. Spiegel explained that AI has significantly improved productivity within the company, enabling teams to reduce repetitive work, accelerate development cycles, and improve services for users, advertisers, and partners. He noted that Snap has already seen internal benefits from AI tools, with “small squads” using automation and machine learning systems to enhance product development, advertising performance, and infrastructure efficiency.
The company also revealed that more than 65% of its new code is now generated using AI, highlighting the extent to which automation has become embedded in its engineering operations.
The restructuring is expected to save Snap over $500 million annually by 2026, as the company shifts toward a leaner operating model focused on profitability and long-term sustainability.
Snap said it is aiming to streamline operations while investing more heavily in AI-driven products, subscription services like Snapchat and advertising technologies. Snap’s decision reflects a broader trend across the tech sector, where companies including Meta, Amazon, Oracle, and Block have also announced job cuts while expanding AI deployment. Analysts say firms are increasingly restructuring around AI capabilities, though some critics argue that “AI efficiency” is sometimes used to justify broader cost-cutting measures.
Affected employees in the United States will receive severance packages, healthcare coverage, and equity vesting support. North American staff were instructed to work remotely during the transition period as notifications were delivered.
The layoffs mark a major turning point for Snap as it deepens its reliance on artificial intelligence to drive efficiency and profitability, signaling how rapidly AI is reshaping employment structures across the global tech industry.
