Chief Saheed Oladele dumps APC for SDP, says move driven by conviction over convenience Prominent politician and APC governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Chief Saheed Oladele, has formally defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), describing his decision as one guided by “conviction over convenience.”

Oladele announced his exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a meeting with party stakeholders, youth groups, and journalists, marking a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections. He disclosed that he had previously declined governorship tickets from two other political parties, insisting that his decision to join the SDP was rooted in ideology rather than personal political gain. Explaining his move, Oladele recalled his early political involvement during Nigeria’s 1993 democratic struggle, saying his experience during the June 12 movement shaped his political beliefs and renewed his commitment to what he described as the SDP’s legacy of justice and people-oriented governance. He added that the party represents a return to foundational democratic ideals, stressing that politics should prioritise service to the people rather than personal ambition or political bargaining.

Oladele also criticised the current political culture, urging politicians to embrace sincerity and reject what he described as opportunistic alignment ahead of elections. Party stakeholders at the event reportedly welcomed his defection, describing it as a boost for the SDP’s growing influence in the Southwest, while APC members have yet to issue an official response. The development adds to the wave of political realignments already shaping early conversations ahead of the 2027 election
