Deep-fried Food Banned And Sugary Items Restricted In Major England School Meals Overhaul
Deep-fried food banned and sugary items restricted in major England school meals overhaul Deep-fried food will be banned and high-sugar items restricted in England’s schools under new government plans to “overhaul” school dinners in a major public health shake-up. The proposals, announced as part of a consultation on updated School Food Standards, are aimed at tackling rising childhood obesity and improving nutrition across both primary and secondary schools.
Under the new rules, all deep-fried foods including items such as chicken nuggets, fries, and fish and chips will be removed from school menus. Sugary desserts and high-sugar snacks will also face strict limits, with sweet treats reduced to occasional servings and required to contain a high proportion of fruit.
Officials say schools will be required to serve more fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and pulses, while also ensuring healthier drinks are prioritised, with water and milk replacing sugary beverages. Schools will also be expected to publish their menus online so parents can monitor compliance with the new standards.
The changes form part of what the Department for Education has described as the most significant update to school food rules in more than a decade. A tougher enforcement system is also planned to ensure schools comply with the standards, addressing long-standing concerns about inconsistent adherence.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the reforms are designed to ensure children receive “delicious, nutritious food at school that gives them the energy to concentrate, learn and thrive,” adding that the overhaul is long overdue.
Public health experts and campaigners have largely welcomed the move, pointing to rising rates of childhood obesity and diet-related health issues as evidence of the need for stronger regulation. However, school leaders have warned that funding and implementation support will be critical to ensure the changes are sustainable.
