Rockstar Games hit by second major cyberattack in three years

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games has been targeted by hackers for the second time in three years, in a fresh cyberattack involving the alleged theft of internal company data. The gaming giant, known for blockbuster franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, is reportedly facing extortion demands from a hacking group claiming to have accessed sensitive corporate systems via a third-party cloud service.

According to reports, the attackers are threatening to release stolen information unless a ransom is paid. Rockstar has acknowledged the incident but downplayed its severity, stating that only a “limited amount of non-material company information” was accessed and insisting there is no impact on its operations or players. The breach is believed to have occurred through vulnerabilities linked to external service providers rather than Rockstar’s core systems. Security researchers say this reflects a growing trend in cyberattacks that exploit third-party platforms as entry points into larger corporations. This marks the second time Rockstar has been seriously targeted in recent years. In 2022, the company suffered a massive leak that saw early development footage of Grand Theft Auto VI circulated online, one of the biggest gaming leaks in history. Cybersecurity experts warn that repeated targeting of major entertainment companies highlights ongoing risks in cloud-based infrastructure and supply-chain security.

At this stage, Rockstar has not confirmed whether any customer data was affected, and investigations are ongoing
