Scholars, OAU VC Praise Tinubu Over Appointment of Jimoh Ibrahim as UN Ambassador Academics and public intellectuals have commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, describing the decision as merit-driven and strategically important for the country’s global diplomacy.

The commendation came during a gathering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where scholars led by the Vice-Chancellor, Adebayo Simeon Bamire, lauded the president’s choice. Professor Bamire said the appointment reflected recognition of competence, intellectual capacity, and leadership experience, noting that Ibrahim possesses strong academic and diplomatic credentials suitable for representing Nigeria on the global stage.

According to the scholars, the envoy’s background in international relations, governance, and legislative work positions him to effectively advance Nigeria’s interests within the United Nations system.

They stressed that Nigeria requires experienced voices in multilateral diplomacy, especially at a time when global cooperation on security, economic development, and climate issues remains critical. The academics maintained that Ibrahim’s emergence signals renewed confidence in Nigeria’s foreign policy direction, adding that the appointment aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s international presence and diplomatic influence.

They also expressed optimism that Nigeria would play a more active role in global decision-making processes through stronger engagement at the UN.

President Tinubu recently named Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations following legislative approval, entrusting him with advancing the country’s diplomatic priorities and strengthening international partnerships.
