President Tinubu Nominates Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as CBN Deputy Governor President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the nomination of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the presidency confirmed Wednesday, subject to confirmation by the Senate. The appointment was announced in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, noting that the nomination was made in accordance with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which empowers the President to appoint deputy governors of the apex bank, subject to Senate approval.Yuguda’s nomination follows the recent appointment of the former CBN Deputy Governor, Bala Bello, as Special Adviser to the President on Political Economy. In his directive, President Tinubu urged the nominee to discharge his responsibilities with renewed dedication, professionalism, and commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability and growth if confirmed by the Senate.
Yuguda is a seasoned banker and financial expert with decades of experience in Nigeria’s monetary and financial systems:
- He last served as Director‑General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2020 to 2024, where he played a key role in regulatory reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capital markets.
- He graduated in 1983 with a B.Sc. in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and later obtained a Master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 1991.
- He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a chartered financial analyst (CFA) charterholder.
- Yuguda began his career in 1984 at the CBN as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department.
- Between 1997 and 2001, he served as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before returning to the CBN, where he ultimately retired in 2016 after serving six years as Director of the Reserve Management Department.
- If confirmed by the Senate, Yuguda will join the leadership of Nigeria’s central bank at a critical time for the economy, bringing extensive experience in banking regulation, international finance, and monetary policy.
