Nursing Mother Drags Husband To Court Over ₦10,000 Monthly Breastfeeding Allowance
Nursing Mother Drags Husband to Court Over ₦10,000 Monthly Breastfeeding Allowance A nursing mother, Firdausi Ahmad, has approached a Sharia Court in Kaduna State seeking the dissolution of her marriage and a monthly payment of ₦10,000 for the upkeep of her eight-month-old daughter during breastfeeding. Ahmad appeared before the court on Thursday through her lawyer, Malam Sani Sunusi, who told the court that his client had been married to her husband, Malam Anas, for three years. According to the lawyer, the dispute arose after the husband allegedly asked Ahmad to return to her parents’ home and remain there until he gave her permission to return to their matrimonial home. Sunusi told the court that since she left, the husband had neither visited her nor checked on their infant daughter. Through her counsel, Ahmad asked the court to dissolve the marriage through Khul’i, a form of Islamic divorce initiated by a wife, and said she was willing to return the ₦100,000 dowry paid at the time of the marriage. She also requested ₦10,000 monthly to cater for the child’s needs during the eight-month breastfeeding period. “My client prays the court to dissolve the marriage through Khul’i and is willing to return his dowry of ₦100,000,” her lawyer told the court. He further asked that the husband be ordered to pay the requested monthly amount to support the baby. The husband was absent when the matter came up for hearing. The presiding judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, adjourned the case until November 11, 2026, to allow the complainant to present her witness or supporting evidence. The judge also directed the court registrar to send an invitation to the defendant and ensure that he attends the next hearing. No final ruling was delivered on the divorce request or the financial claims at the hearing. The case is expected to resume when the complainant presents her evidence and the court has an opportunity to hear the matter further.
