2027 Gongola Elders warn APC against imposition of Adamawa governorship candidate, demand transparent primaries

Elders under the Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF) in Adamawa State have issued a strong warning to the All Progressives Congress (APC), urging the party to avoid any attempt to impose a governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections and insisting on transparent, competitive primaries.

The group also threatened to resist any undemocratic processes, stressing that internal democracy must be upheld to preserve unity and electoral credibility within the party. Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, spokesperson for the group, Engr. Markus Gundiri, said all aspirants must be allowed a level playing field in the selection process. He warned that any attempt to manipulate the party’s governorship ticket in favour of a preferred candidate would be strongly resisted through legitimate and collective action.

According to the elders, the emergence of a flagbearer must be determined strictly by party members and delegates through a free and fair primary election. The Gongola elders described alleged attempts by some political actors within the APC to impose a candidate as a threat to democracy and party stability.

They stressed that such actions would not be accepted under any circumstance, adding that imposition only breeds resentment, weakens political structures, and endangers electoral success.

The group maintained that

• Internal democracy must not be compromised
• Any imposition will be met with resistance

While reaffirming support for the APC-led federal government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the elders clarified that their backing does not extend to undemocratic practices at the state level. They emphasized that loyalty to the party must go hand-in-hand with fairness, justice, and inclusiveness in candidate selection The group urged both national and state leadership of the APC to immediately halt any move perceived as candidate imposition and to ensure credible primaries ahead of 2027.They also cautioned that ignoring the voices of stakeholders in Adamawa could trigger internal resistance and weaken the party’s chances in the general elections. The Gongola Peoples Forum represents ethnic nationalities from the former Gongola region and has become a key stakeholder voice in Adamawa politics. The group has repeatedly advocated for internal democracy, zoning fairness, and transparent political processes within major parties.
